Scholarship Program

The Beaver Area School District Education Foundation is pleased to announce the Class of 2024 Scholarship Awards Program. The Foundation manages approximately 40 endowed funds, each of which was established to serve a specific purpose, and from which scholarships will be awarded to seniors attending Beaver Area Senior High School.

Last year the BASD Education Foundation was proud to present more than $45,000 in scholarships to deserving seniors.

Each year, all senior students at Beaver Area High School, are eligible to apply for the upcoming scholarship program. Recipients are then chosen by the Scholarship committee, and any specific guidelines for each individual scholarship. The Foundation is a Not-For-Profit organization duly certified and exempt from federal income taxation under Section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code, and has been established by the board of the Beaver Area School District (the “District”) to solicit, receive and administer funds for the general purposes of educational assistance and enhancement for the benefit of District students, teachers and residents.

2024 SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION

We are excited to launch this year’s scholarship application process for our 2024 Senior Class at Beaver Area High School. 2024 Scholarship Application

Deadline to submit an application is FRIDAY, MARCH 1 AT 3PM.  Scholarships will be awarded at the Academic Awards Night on May 22nd.  Scholarship recipients and their parents will receive an invitation in the mail.

Our current Scholarship Funds:

Chad Webster Memorial Award             

In recognition of high academic achievement in the field of history and participation in school activities and community functions          

Chad Webster was a 1997 graduate of Beaver High School who fought a courageous battle with cancer and passed away on March 8, 1999.

Adolph Ellis Memorial Scholarship Award

In recognition of extraordinary efforts in the pursuit of your high school education          

Adolph Ellis was a 1966 graduate of Beaver High School who enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1967. He was tragically killed in Vietnam on March 1, 1968.

Roxsan Betters Albanese Memorial Award

In recognition of service to School, Church, and Community         

Roxsan Betters Albanese passed away on November 29, 2005, at the age of 37 following a courageous battle with cancer.

Mr. Victor A. Martinetti Service to Community Scholarship

In recognition of outstanding community service and aspirations to pursue education after high school.

Mr. Martinetti has served since 1957 in public education in both the Beaver and Midland communities.

Gail B. Beatty Memorial Scholarship

For outstanding potential in the field of Elementary Education   

Gail Beatty was an elementary teacher at Brighton Township Elementary School

John Berdell Memorial Scholarship Award

In recognition of John Berdell-like attributes of Integrity, Honesty, Dedication, Determination, Commitment, and Caring      

John Berdell was a Beaver Area teacher, coach, counselor and high school principal

Katherine Borsos Memorial Award

In recognition of outstanding potential for future growth and extraordinary effort while pursuing a high school education     

Kathy Borsos was a Beaver High School English teacher who passed away on July 29, 2012, shortly after her retirement

Jim and Ruth Cutri Scholarship Award

In recognition of sportsmanship and outstanding potential in the teaching/coaching field

Jim Cutri was a teacher and coach at Beaver High School

Lloyd W. Dyer Engineering Scholarship

For outstanding potential in the field of Engineering       

Mr. Dyer was an intelligent and creative person and true scholar. His determination to get an education at the University of Montana resulted in his working at all kinds of jobs, stopping school to earn money and going back to school until he received his engineering degree. He held 63 patents during his career at Westinghouse, including the circuit breaker, patented during WWII

Ralph E."Buss" Morton Leadership Scholarship

In recognition of leadership qualities reflected in the Beaver Area High School JROTC Program  

Buss Morton was a long-time Beaver resident who was actively involved in the Beaver Area Heritage Foundation and was very supportive of the JROTC program

Beaver County Healthcare Scholarship

In recognition of high academic achievement and outstanding potential in a health care field             

Mark E. Noll Family Scholarship

In recognition of pursuing higher education in a community service-related field and participation in school and extra-curricular activities, work and volunteer experience and community involvement.

This scholarship fund was established to provide for students entering fields to serve others such as Funeral Director, Nursing, Pre-Med or Education

William K. Schwartz Memorial Award

In recognition of outstanding contribution to the Beaver Area Senior High School Music Program  

Mr. Schwartz was a varsity marching and concert band director as well as director of the "Beaver Bop-Cats" swing band

Mike Walter Memorial Scholarship

In recognition of outstanding work ethic while participating in school, sports, and community activities.

Coach Mike Walter was a part of the Beaver Football Staff for four years and a teacher at Moon Middle School. He had a great passion for education and all things related to sports. Mike passed away in a tragic car accident in December 2011. He strongly believed that good students were left behind due to a lack of scholarships that focused on the individual as a whole rather than just their academics

Blanche E. and George B. Shaw, Jr. Family Scholarship Award

In recognition of high academic achievement and participation in athletics, school activities, and community functions         

In memory of George Bracken Shaw, Jr - BHS 1923 and in honor of his daughters Mary Elizabeth Shaw Rigdon - BHS 1954 and Sarah Virginia Shaw Wright - BHS 1955

Beaver Area High School Alumni Award

In recognition of demonstrated traits of overall Scholarship, Leadership, Character and Service   

This scholarship was established with funds generated from an All-Class Reunion that was held in June of 2000.

Beaver Area Quarterback Club Pat Tarquinio Scholarship

For qualities that reflect the Beaver Football Program's "Tradition of Excellence"

During the 1997 football season the president of the QB Club and his staff created this scholarship in the name of long-time coach Pat Tarquinio

Bobby E. Carter Memorial Basketball Scholarship

To an outstanding senior basketball player who has demonstrated Integrity, Faith and Courage      

Bobby Carter was the brother of Betty Sue Schaughency. He earned all-state honors in basketball at Virginia High School and also was a star on the University of Tennessee team. He served two terms in the Tennessee State Senate and earned a reputation for integrity and commitment. He also served faithfully for 32 years as pastor of Gardner's Chapel primitive Baptist Church, the church his father founded in Bristol, VA. He was a former PE teacher and head basketball coach at Beaver for two years in the mid- sixties. (In fact, he was Adolph Ellis and Denny Creese’s teacher and coach.)

Evelyn Cassidy Memorial Award             

For excellence in English             

Mrs. Cassidy was a retired High School English and French teacher

Stephen H. Witowich, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Award

In recognition of high academic achievement in Chemistry and participation in school activities and community functions      

Steve Witowich was a beloved Chemistry teacher and head of the Science Department who passed away in August of 2007 following a brief illness. Students began fundraising with the assistance of teachers and parents.

William N. DiBenedetto Fort McIntosh Club Scholarship

For pursuit of 2 - 4-year educational training in the vocational/technical fields.  

Bill DiBenedetto was a band director and music teacher as well as the District's Staff Development Coordinator. Following his tenure at Beaver he served as Assistant Superintendent and Superintendent in several Beaver County Districts. He was actively involved in various organizations in the community.

Jack & Betty Gloekler Memorial Scholarship

In recognition of high academic achievement and outstanding potential in the field of Computer Science/Information Technology  

This scholarship was established by the Gloekler family in memory of their parents

Jeff Murrin Memorial Scholarship

In recognition of high academic achievement and outstanding potential in the field of marine biology/fisheries, religious studies, or a medical related field to assist those with disabilities       

This scholarship is given in memory of Charles Jeffrey Murrin, the late husband of Mary Kay Gloekler Murrin, Class of 1972. He was a devout Christian family man, an avid runner, and a life-long learner. Jeff was an accomplished "catch and release" fly fisherman, having a deep love and respect for the great outdoors. His philosophy of life could be paraphrased as the worst day fishing was better than the best day at work! At the age of 55, Jeff was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, known as Lou Gehrig's disease. During the ten years he lived with ALS, Jeff became a role model and advocate for people with disabilities. This scholarship is awarded to a student attending a trade school or collegiate program for study of one of the following: marine biology/fisheries, religious studies, or a medically related field to assist those with disabilities. May the recipient of this award make a difference in the lives of others as Jeff did to those who knew and loved him.

Carlee Houghtelin Memorial Scholarship

For traits of a true friend who sees others for who they truly are on the inside   

Carlee was a member of the Class of 2012 who passed away in a car accident due to a drunk driver in July 2011 prior to the start of her senior year.

Frank Trill Outdoorsman Fund

Frank Trill Veterinary Science Scholarship - awarded to a graduating student with a goal of attaining a certificate of training, associate degree, bachelor's degree or doctorate in the Veterinary Sciences

Frank Trill Outdoorsman Scholarship - awarded to a graduating student who plans to enroll in a post-high school course of study with the goal of attaining a certificate of training, associate degree, bachelor's degree or doctorate in the environmental, forestry or horticultural sciences.           

Mr. Trill desired to promote recreational participation for both boys and girls in outdoor sportsmanship, particularly hunting, fishing, and shooting. He was also an award-winning breeder and trainer of English Springer Spaniels as retrievers. He won awards as an avid skeet and trap shooter, despite his physical disabilities. While proudly serving in the US Army during World War II in Italy, his hands were run over by the tread of an enemy tank. This made his skeet shooting and dog training skills all the more remarkable. He traveled the world, but always called Beaver County his home. He died on February 11, 2005, and in his Last Will and Testament bequeathed his entire estate to establish this fund to benefit our youth who show interest in the outdoor sporting activities that he loved so much.

Eric and Jamie McIntosh Family Scholarship

For facing adversity and having demonstrated the ability and desire to overcome          

Eric and Jamie McIntosh are Beaver Alumni and life-long residents of Beaver County. They are inspired by individuals who view obstacles in life as opportunities rather than insurmountable hurdles. They are also passionate about helping others. Eric and Jamie believe that all people have the ability to do great things, regardless of their current or past circumstances.

Kay Lewis Memorial Award

For a senior who exemplifies the Kay Lewis attributes of courage, leadership, and sportsmanship.

Kay Lewis was a 1947 graduate of Beaver High School. He died during his senior year at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill Campus. The award was established in May 1953 by his Sigma Chi Fraternity; and went to a boy who exemplified true sportsmanship in his attitude and conduct. At UNC, Kay was active in intramural sports.

William H. Lohr Scholarship

For outstanding potential in the field of Elementary Education   

William H. Lohr is a Beaver High School graduate, Class of 1947. He received his bachelor’s degree from Grove City College and master’s from the University of Pittsburgh. He taught in Midland for ten years, Beaver for two, and spent 26 years as principal, at one time or another, of all five Beaver Elementary Schools. He retired in 1990 and spent the next 20 years as a volunteer in a second-grade classroom.

Tom Bowser Memorial Scholarship

In recognition of Tom Bowser-like qualities of showing compassion, leadership, inclusion, good nature, and camaraderie while pursuing a high school education.          

Tom Bowser was a Beaver Area graduate in 1988. He was a son, brother, a devoted husband, an amazing father, and a great uncle, but to everyone who met him, he was a great friend. Tom showed such strong qualities that made him into the amazing man he was. Tom passed away in August 2018 of a heart attack. Starting this scholarship is just one way his family is keeping his memory alive.

Paul Jones Memorial Scholarship

Commitment to team and sport; dedication to practice; and service to community       

“John Paul Jones was “Mr. Sports” for more than forty years in the Beaver Area. “Retired” at age 75, he was still active as a tennis instructor at St. Petersburg, Florida. Paul was a star athlete in his younger, days, particularly in football at Beaver High School and Franklin & Marshall College, but it was as a community recreation director for both children and adults that he is best known…Paul coached tennis for many years for both young people and adults and his tennis programs helped develop many outstanding players who later formed the nucleus for Beaver Area High School’s strong tennis teams after the sport was started there in the 1950s. The high school tennis courts now bear his name, as does the Beaver Basketeers annual Paul Jones Basketball Scholarship.”

Dr. Robert C. Jones Scholarship

For the senior who exhibited consistent, exemplary effort and service to the Music Program        

This scholarship was established by the family of Joseph A and Ruth M Rieser, whose children all graduated from Beaver Area Senior High School. Thanks to their contributions and that of Bob and Maryann Jones this award honors Dr. Jones, who was a former Beaver Band Director. Dr. Jones' dedication to music education in our community continues to influence the lives of his former students.

Bob and Kay Johnston Memorial Scholarship

Kay Johnston Scholarship - to a graduating student who exemplifies kindness, compassion, and cares for others and will be pursuing a future career in the medical field.

Bob Johnston Scholarship - to a graduating student who exemplifies leadership qualities in the community.

Supporting the community and wishes to offer a memorial scholarship in memory of our parents for being leaders in their community and professions.

Bob Barrickman Memorial Scholarship

Awarded to a graduating senior pursuing their education or future career in the fields of communication and/or journalism and broadcast journalism.

Bob was a legendary brodcaster in Beaver County, with a voice recognizable across all airwaves. He announced for many events, sports, and fundraisers. A Beaver graduate and proud Bobcat, he passed away in 2022 and his family has started this award to continue his legacy.

Frye Family Scholarship

Graduating Senior who attends the BASD through the Midland/Beaver Tuition Agreement.

Bobby E. Carter Memorial Scholarship

Awarded annually to an outstanding senior basketball player who has demonstrated Integrity, Faith and Courage. Please note this scholarship is awarded without an application needed per the agreement when the fund was established.
